News: 1,300-year-old settlement discovered in UAE; believed to be the oldest pearling town in Arabian Gulf
The Department of Tourism and Archaeology in Umm al-Quwain, working with local and foreign partners, has discovered a settlement on Siniya Island that dates back nearly 1,300 years.
As a result, the community, which is close to the ancient Christian monastery that was uncovered last year, is the oldest pearling village in the Arabian Gulf. Archaeologists think that the monastery’s priests may have settled close to the prosperous pearling community.
AREA
The community is one of the biggest of its kind in the nation, covering an area of about 12 hectares. The town looks to have had thousands of residents living in hundreds of homes.
Large buildings with courtyards and tiny, tightly packed double-roomed houses have been found during excavations on the island; those who found them claim they were homes to wealthier merchants and poorer fishermen. The houses were constructed of rock and lime, and the roofs were probably made of palm trunks that had been transported from the mainland.
