How to Check the Quality of Cement

Checking the quality of cement is an essential step to ensure that the cement you are using is of good quality and will perform as expected in your construction project. Here are some ways to check the quality of cement:

Check the manufacturing date and the packaging: Cement bags should have a manufacturing date and batch number printed on them. Ensure that the cement bags are not torn, damp or damaged.

Some Checklists for the Quality of Cement

Here is a checklist for the quality of cement.

1. Color Test

The color of the cement should be either light or grey with a touch of green, and it should remain the same throughout all of its packagings. But it also relies on the kind of cement that was employed in the building. The color displays traits that indicate a high degree of burning as well as an overabundance of either clay or lime.

2. Smell Test

You should take a small sample of cement and smell it to see if it has any pulverized sediment or clay as an adulterant.

3. Test of Cement’s Temperature

Your palm should experience some degree of coolness rather than warmth if you dip it into a bag of cement. This indicates that the hydration process for the cement in the bag has not yet taken place.

4. Lump Test

The lump test looks for lumps to see if a substance has absorbed moisture or not. These are indications that the cement has started to solidify. Therefore, be careful to avoid buying cement sacks that contain both small and tough lumps. Instead, the cement needs to be smooth to the touch, which you can verify by doing so. Cement that has been combined with sand has a grainy texture.

5. Cement Float Testing

When a small quantity of cement is combined with water, the cement particles should float on the water’s surface for a while after the procedure is finished.

6. Cement’s Strength Testing

Make cement bricks with the following measurements: 200 millimeters long, 25 millimeters wide, and 25 millimeters high. Give them seven days to heal by sitting. After that, put it in a position where it is sitting on a 150 mm-wide support.

The cement sample should then be filled with a weight of approximately 34 kilograms. If the cement is good, it should be able to hold the weight without showing any signs of deformation.

7. Cement’s Strength Testing

It is vitally important to check and validate the product’s quality before using cement. The aforementioned cement assays can be used on the construction site to achieve this.

The cement’s technical properties can’t all be seen in person. Nevertheless, you should be able to conduct some simple physical field tests with ease, and the results of these tests should be able to rapidly reveal the quality of the cement.
